Finding Street Art in New Zealand

I’m not really into street art but I’ve always thought that it can be an interesting form of expression. I might not always get it all the time but some of these street arts look so good that I’m just amazed at the artists’ talents in bringing it out on different types of canvases.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Found this at a public parking lot in Christchurch, isn’t this so beautiful? I wonder who the person is here…hahaha..anyone knows?

The street art that I saw were quite elaborate and big so I wasn’t sure if that was the norm in New Zealand usually really but they were all very beautiful nevertheless. Singapore doesn’t have too many of street art such as these so it was especially fun for me whenever I happened to stumble on one.

Dunedin, New Zealand

One of the darker street art that I stumbled on in Dunedin. This was in a little corner of an alley and I still can’t figure it out..haha

Most of the street art that I saw was in Christchurch and Dunedin because these were a few of the cities that I visited but I’m sure there’s plenty more to find in other parts of New Zealand. I just thought that it would be quite interesting to share some of the street arts that I’ve encountered as they were really beautifully executed.

Dunedin, New Zealand

This one was like inception…I loved the whole idea of it, especially the way parts of the building was incorporated into the art..notice Jack the beanstalk at the corner climbing the actual pipe on the building? It was all so fascinating!

The street arts in Dunedin required a bit of a walk to find them as there were some that were hidden in alleyway so it was always quite exciting whenever I bumped into one. The ones in Christchurch were pretty much everywhere so I had a lot of fun trying to catch most of them.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Found this as I was walking to my hostel in Christchurch. Hard not to notice them when it was this huge, haha..

All in all, the street art was a fun way of exploring the city. Walking around a city was usually a big change in landscape from the other towns in New Zealand so being able to find these randomly was usually a surprise. Some of the street art made me laugh and smile (like the last one), some made me reflective (the dark one) while some made me admire the artist’s talents (the big girl’s face). My favourite is still the one with Jack & the Beanstalk though. That won some points with me. 🙂

Christchurch, New Zealand

Found penguins surfing around the wall in Christchurch – so cute!!

What about you? Do you like street art? Which ones do you like here? Please do share! 🙂

  1. This is some amazing street art in New Zealand! The penguin one did make me smile too 🙂 Like you I also was never into street art. When I lived in Singapore and Malaysia, as you mentioned you don’t see that kind of art a lot – and if something was drawn on walls and concrete, it would be called graffiti 😀 There is a lot of street art in Melbourne and so many walls are changing with street art almost every week. Hard to keep up, lol.

  2. I often wonder how does an artist possible
Paint a face when they can only see such a small part of the big picture? It seems it would take extraordinary talent to do so. The face may be my top pick just for that reason.

I recently looked at some beautiful New Zealand architecture, which crosses over the traditional Māori culture and modern building techniques, would love for you to check it out! Glad you liked Dunedin!! Happy Sunday 🙂
